The number of people out of work in the UK has declined for the first time in 18 months, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS).
Total unemployment now stands at 2.46m a fall of 7,000 on three months ago, while the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance fell to 1.61m.
David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), says: “The welcome fall in unemployment raises hopes that next week’s GDP figures will confirm that the recession is over. But the labour market figures also show that there was a fall in employment, and more significantly, the level of economically inactive people has increased.

“The gap between public and private sector wages has widened, reinforcing the need for a freeze in the total public sector pay bill as a key measure in battling the UK’s unsustainable budget deficit. We cannot have a situation where public sector wages are outstripping those in the private sector.â€

Graduates and school leavers face a tough labour market, according to the Chartered Institiute of Personnel and Development CIPD/KPMG Labour Market Outlook report.
The report shows that just 17% of employers plan to hire 16-year-olds leaving school in the quarter, while a third plan to hire school leavers at eighteen.Â
Less than a half of employers plan to hire university leavers and 45% and 54% of the private and voluntary sectors respectively are not planning to hire young people.
University graduates are shunning the graduate job market due to concerns about job prospects, according to business advisory firm Deloitte.
The UK Graduate Careers Survey of 16,357 graduates by market researchers High Fliers shows that a record 52% regarded prospects for new graduates as “very limited†- the highest figure since the survey started in 1995.
Sarah Shillingford, graduate recruitment Partner at Deloitte, says: “Too much anxiety about job prospects and debt can be damaging to students’ future prospects. We must help graduates avoid the ‘career paralysis’ trap, which is often triggered when fear sets in and inaction takes over.â€
 “Our intake hasn’t changed significantly in the last few years. On 1 July our application process will open for 2010. We have vacancies for around a 1,000 graduates to join Deloitte. Successful applicants may also have the chance to work on some of the UK’s most exciting projects such as supporting the delivery of the London 2012 Games.â€

Despite a 55% drop in production compared with the same month in 2008, two major motor manufacturers plan to create jobs.
McLaren announced plans to build a new plant, creating 800 jobs and Rolls-Royce is taking on 150 workers at its factory in Goodwood, West Sussex.
The UK is positioned to come out of recession more quickly “and with less blood on the carpet than its European counterparts”, the CBI’s director-general Richard Lambert told a London audience on Wednesday.
Speaking at a client breakfast briefing sponsored by Hays, Lambert said because the UK recognises the value of flexible labour, as well as its flexible currency, these are factors which are likely to contribute to a quicker recovery.
A number of stabilising factors will likely kick in, in the short term, he said. Such factors include the need to re-order cleared stock, the Bank of England’s printing more money and rising public spending. Also, Lambert said, exports will likely pick up because sterling has been devalued by 25% since summer 2007.
While increasing public spending will help stabilise the economy in the near term, Lambert said that the current state of public funding was a worrying issue. The UK must see more investment in infrastructure and green technology to drive the economy forward, he said.

Small companies that have often been excluded from tendering for large contracts due to the excessive cost of the process have been thrown a lifeline by a new fund.
The Small Organisation Tender Fund has been launched by Futurebuilders England and the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning (NPTSC) and has already seen more than £6 million invested in 10 organizations in the region through various funds.Â
The new grant fund is designed to finance tendering costs or capacity building work, such as legal costs, advice from procurement specialists, financial expertise and bidding staff costs, to help small organizations win specific public sector contracts.
There is a limited pot of up to £220,000 for this fund, £150,000 of which has been contributed by the NPTSC. Grants will be offered for up to 10 per cent of a contract value, up to a maximum of £15,000. Contracts being tendered for must hold a minimum value of £30,000.Â
For the purposes of the Small Organisation Tender Fund, a “small organisation†is defined as one with an annual turnover of less than £250,000. Applicants must also have been trading for a minimum of one year.
By definition, 51 per cent or more of the income of a public service must come from a contractual source and such contracts can cover a range of public services to benefit society and the environment, such as housing, employment support, educational programmes and health awareness.
The grants will be distributed on a case-by-case basis to organizations able to demonstrate that they stand a good chance of success in their bid.Â
Much of the application assessment will be carried out by phone and there is no closing date for applications.Â
Jonathan Lewis, chief executive of Futurebuilders England, said: “This new fund offers a great chance for smaller third sector organizations to realise their potential. It is just another way we can assist more organizations, regardless of size or stature, to win public sector contracts and develop long-term sustainability.â€
Sarah Wood, programme director of the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning, added: “This is an important alliance. Both our programme and Futurebuilders are very committed to improving the third sector. We anticipate that there will be a lot of interest in the fund and hope that we will be able to help many growing charities and social enterprises who would otherwise be unable to pitch for particular contracts.â€
The Small Organisation Tender Fund is the first in a suite of new offerings Futurebuilders intends to launch to support the development of small organizations. Futurebuilders also currently offers a £1m interest free, loan-based tender fund for larger third sector organizations struggling to meet the costs of tendering for public sector contracts.

Local councils in the West Midlands have entered into talks with government over a £1bn statutory city region plan which could create more than 40,000 jobs in Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country.
Members of the city region board are due to approve the plan, which would see the construction of two new metro lines, the development of three regeneration zones in Birmingham, a technology park near Wolverhampton and improvements at two motorway junctions.
According to the Local Government Chronicle, discussions are ongoing with the Treasury and Department of Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform officials, suggesting the bid is already attracting serious ministerial consideration.
